Whale Watching Gansbaai vs Hermanus

Two of South Africa's top whale watching towns sit 40 minutes apart along the same coast. Here's an honest, side-by-side guide to help you choose.

Hermanus and Gansbaai are the two most-booked whale watching destinations in South Africa. They sit 40 minutes apart along the same coast, share the same Southern Right Whale population during the season, and yet deliver completely different experiences. If you're choosing between them, here's the comparison you need.

Hermanus — the world's best land-based whale watching

Hermanus sits above the deep, sheltered waters of Walker Bay. The geometry of the bay — a long, gently curving coastline with a steep underwater shelf — pulls Southern Right Whales to within metres of the famous Cliff Path. The town has the world's only Whale Crier, who blows a kelp horn each time whales are spotted.

Strengths:

  • World-class shore-based viewing — free, all day, every day during the season.
  • Permitted boat-based tours from the New Harbour at scheduled times.
  • Family-friendly with all ages welcome.
  • Charming town with restaurants, accommodation, the Cliff Path and the Whale Crier.
  • Closer to Cape Town (120 km vs Gansbaai's 170 km).

Gansbaai — Big 5 marine safari capital

Gansbaai is a working fishing village on the coast south-east of Hermanus. The boats depart from Kleinbaai harbour for trips around Dyer Island and Geyser Rock — a Cape fur seal colony of roughly 60,000 animals, a Great White Shark hunting ground, and an African penguin sanctuary. Add the migrating whales and you have the "Marine Big 5" in a single trip.

Strengths:

  • Marine Big 5: whales, sharks, seals, dolphins and African penguins.
  • Longer trips (2.5–3 hours) covering more coastline.
  • Dyer Island ecosystem — one of the world's great marine wildlife hotspots.
  • Cage diving with Great Whites is available as a separate trip.

  • One whale watching day total: book Hermanus. The Walker Bay encounter is the iconic experience.
  • Want sharks, seals and penguins too: book Gansbaai.
  • Travelling with small children or prone to seasickness: Hermanus — calmer water, shorter trip, shore option always available.
  • Two days available: base in Hermanus, day-trip to Gansbaai. Best of both.

Or split the difference — book a scenic flight

A Hermanus whale watching scenic flight covers Walker Bay and the Gansbaai/Dyer Island ecosystem from the air — pricing and availability on request.
