The South African whale watching season is one of the longest and most reliable in the world. From June to early December, the cold Antarctic-bound currents of the Benguela meet the warm Agulhas current along the Cape coast, creating the rich, sheltered nursery waters that draw Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales, Bryde's Whales and a parade of other marine wildlife close to shore.
This guide breaks the season down month by month so you can plan your trip — whether you're flying into Cape Town for a long weekend or driving the Garden Route over a fortnight. For specific destinations see Whale Watching Hermanus, Gansbaai, Plettenberg Bay and the rest.
Month-by-month whale watching guide
June — early season opens
The first Southern Right Whales arrive in Walker Bay and along the Cape coast from mid-June. Numbers are still building. Humpback Whales begin their northward migration past the Garden Route. Trips run daily across all destinations and early-season pricing can apply.
July — Southern Right Whales settle in
By July the Southern Right population is well established along the Cape coast. Walker Bay, Gansbaai and the Garden Route bays all hold whales. Sightings from shore in Hermanus become reliable. Sea conditions can be wintry — bring layers.
August — early peak
Mother-and-calf pairs start to dominate sightings. The Hermanus Whale Festival kicks off the springtime celebrations. Trips run consistently and the weather begins to warm.
September — peak month #1
September is the start of the absolute peak. Calm spring days, mother-and-calf pairs close to shore, and breaching adults make for the best boat-based viewing of the year. Book well in advance — operators sell out.
October — peak month #2
October often delivers the season's best sightings. Long, calm days, frequent breaching, and the chance to combine whales with the Cape's spring wildflowers. Read Best Time for Whale Watching in Hermanus.
November — late peak
Conditions remain excellent. Calves are growing visibly week by week. Humpback Whale sightings increase as they pass on their southward return migration. Bryde's Whales (year-round residents) become more active as the sardine concentrations build.
December — season tails off
Most Southern Right Whales depart for Antarctic feeding grounds by mid-December. Sightings remain possible to early December but become less reliable. Garden Route destinations stay productive longer.
January–May — off-season
Southern Right Whale sightings are rare. Bryde's Whales remain present year-round, common and bottlenose dolphins are reliable along the whole coast, and the boats still run for general marine wildlife trips at off-season rates.
